Inflation (CPI)
The price-change measure driving RBA decisions — and your variable rate.
What is Inflation (CPI)?
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the change in prices of a basket of household goods and services over time. It's Australia's primary inflation measure, published quarterly by the ABS. The RBA targets CPI inflation of 2–3%.
Why it matters for you
When CPI runs hot, the RBA typically raises the cash rate to cool demand — lifting your variable rate. When CPI cools, rate cuts follow. Watching CPI releases is the closest thing to previewing your future repayments.
