Title Deed
The legal document proving property ownership. Now held electronically.
What is Title Deed?
The title deed is the legal document proving property ownership. In Australia, titles are now held electronically at the state Land Titles Office — most owners never physically hold a paper title. The "Certificate of Title" confirms who owns the property and what encumbrances exist.
Why it matters for you
At settlement, your lender typically lodges a mortgage on the title. When you discharge the loan, the mortgage is removed — leaving the title unencumbered. Your conveyancer coordinates all title updates; you don't need to touch the Land Titles Office directly.
